Fun learning times in Nursery this week

Nursery Learning

This week in Nursery we enjoyed exploring the ice we found outside in the outdoor area on Monday.

Children enjoying searching for where the ice had formed.  They also enjoying touching, carrying and breaking it!

We have started to learn about the celebration of Christmas and children enjoyed decorating the Christmas tree in the classroom.

Some children used cones in the outdoor area to make a tree of their own.

Forest School Thursday 2nd December

This week was very exciting for the children: we had snow on the ground, sun in the air and a real fire in the log circle. It was very cold but most of the children coped well.

We played the Forest Fire game, as last week, to get the children moving and warm, they really enjoyed screaming as the ran across the field.

We then introduced the fire steel or Dragon Sneeze and showed the children the basic safety rules of being close to fire. They learned that they need to check that they do not have anything on them that may dangle into the fire and then how to sit in the Respect Position.  When we are close to fire, we use the Respect Position to ensure that we can stand up and back quickly, if we need to do so. It also ensures that we don’t put our heads or hands near the fire as we get up.

The fire steel is used to create a spark to light a fire, it can be a real challenge to strike so the children have to learn the life skills of persistence and resilience and keep trying lots of times.

We ended the session sitting round our fire; each child got the opportunity to roast their own vegan marshmallow. We focused on the language, finding words to describe the marshmallow and the fire such as flame, fuel, smoke, logs, delicious, sweet, and squashy.

A winter picnic!

 A Winter Picnic!

Nursery have enjoyed reading the story of Whatever Next over the last few weeks.  To make the story come to life for the children we enjoyed our own picnic in the nursery outdoor area.

We had jam sandwiches, fruit, a biscuit and either milk or water to drink.

We used this experience as a stimulus to encourage children to mark-make (draw and write) about what they had done.
